Matthew Thomas Skiba is the founding lead guitarist and vocalist of Alkaline Trio and former guitarist and co-lead vocalist of blink-182 from 2015 to 2022.

Background[]

Matt Skiba was born in Chicago and moved to nearby McHenry at the age of three. He began playing piano and drums at an early age. His mother, Joan Skiba, is a fourth and fifth grade teacher at Woods Creek Elementary School in Crystal Lake, Illinois. His father, Thomas Skiba, was an oral surgeon. He has two younger twin sisters. Skiba studied design at Chicago's Columbia College but left in 1996 to form Alkaline Trio.

Blink-182[]

Skiba joined blink-182 following Tom DeLonge's departure in 2015 and appeared on their seventh studio album California, released in 2016, as well as Nine in 2019. During Skiba's time with blink-182, the band received their first career Grammy award nomination for Best Rock Album at the 59th Grammy Awards.

In August 2020, rumors began surrounding Skiba's potential departure from the band after he did not appear on the cover art of Let Me Down, their collaboration with pop singer Oliver Tree, and did not sing on the single Quarantine. Mark Hoppus disproved the rumors, joking, "I hope he's still in the band, I mean, I saw him in the studio yesterday," Skiba was not featured on the single as he did not have a home studio to record from during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Skiba voluntarily left blink-182 for DeLonge's rejoining in 2022, releasing a statement congratulating the band on their reunion and thanking fans for their support during his time in the group. Following his departure, Skiba has continued to share his support for the band and remains friends with Hoppus and Barker.

"When those guys first asked me to join the band, I thought they were on acid, thinking that that was gonna fly. And it did somehow. I mean it’s like, wow, people are actually coming out to see this thing and a lot of people are buying the record and responding really positively to it." -Matt Skiba
